What are my options for virtual instruction next school year?

High School : Students who will be in 6th – 12th  grades next year (2024-2025)  may apply to enroll full time at Lighthouse Virtual Academy.  Lighthouse Virtual Academy is Muscogee County’s virtual option for 6th – 12th grades.

What will education look like at Lighthouse Virtual Academy?

MCSD will provide consistent, weekly live instruction through Zoom and Canvas. Students will participate in synchronous and asynchronous instruction and collaboration.

Instruction will be an entirely online program

Devices will be provided by MCSD

If I enroll at Lighthouse Virtual Academy, can my student still participate in activities at their home school?

Students may participate in sports and other extracurricular activities such as clubs and dances at their attendance zoned home school only.  Please note that participation is subject to Georgia High School Association rules and eligibility where applicable.

Can I return to my home school any time next year if I decide Lighthouse Virtual Academy is not the right spot for me?

Students who elect to attend Lighthouse Virtual Academy are asked to make a year-long commitment.  This year-long commitment is necessary because due to the nature of Lighthouse curriculum, leaving mid-year may negatively impact a student’s credits and progress toward graduation.  However, students will be permitted to return to their districted school within the first 10 days of the school year.

When do applications open at Lighthouse Virtual Academy?

If my child stays at their home school, can they still take virtual courses?

No.

What courses are offered at Lighthouse Virtual Academy?

We offer a full variety of courses for grades 6-12 for the 2024-2025  school year.

What is the Eligibility Criteria?

MCSD will allow any interested parents / guardians of MCSD students in the rising 6th – 12th   grades the opportunity to apply to Lighthouse Virtual Academy for the 2024-2025  school year. Lighthouse Virtual Academy is not an appropriate instructional model for all students. Parents should carefully review the information on this website and consider whether Lighthouse Virtual Academy  is an appropriate environment for their child. If your student was not successful doing the virtual option during the 2020-2021 school year, consider the Checklist for a Successful Virtual Learner and this website when making the best decision for your student. If you answered false on the checklist, virtual learning may not be an appropriate choice for your student. Additionally, students must have attained a 70% or higher on grades in classes attempted during the 2023-2024  school year, be on grade level in Reading and Math, and no discipline incidents which resulted in suspension or expulsion during the 2023-2024 school year. There will be required testing in addition to the application. Students will sign up for their testing date when they fill out the application.

What is the attendance policy for Lighthouse Virtual Academy?

Students are required to attend virtual instruction and comply with Program and instructor requirements regarding virtual lessons.  Attendance will look different at the virtual program, but students must still meet mandatory attendance requirements.

Will my child be required to take Milestones, AP testing, Talented and Gifted testing in person?

Milestones, AP testing, TAG testing, and other nationally normed tests will require that students report in person to a location in the district to take these assessments. Parents and guardians are required to arrange transportation to and from these events; advance notice will be provided.  No District transportation is available.

Will my child receive the same accommodations from 504, IEP, etc. that they did at their home school?

Students with disabilities or other accommodation needs who meet eligibility criteria are welcomed to apply to Lighthouse Virtual Academy.  The Individual Education Plans (IEP) or Section 504 or Health Plans of student applicants who meet Lighthouse Virtual Academy entrance criteria will be considered on an individualized basis in order to determine whether  Lighthouse Virtual Academy can provide appropriate supports, services, and accommodations.  Supports and services that can be offered by Lighthouse Virtual Academy must be deemed appropriate to meet the student’s needs, and this determination requires an individualized analysis.

Can homeschool students participate in the program?

We welcome students who have previously been home-schooled.  Students who wish to apply to Lighthouse Virtual Academy will need to first register and enroll in the Muscogee County School District in order to apply to Lighthouse Virtual Academy. 

Will transportation be provided for extracurricular activities?

No transportation will be provided. Families should consider this carefully when considering whether Lighthouse Virtual Academy is right for their family.

Can students also be in the dual enrollment program?

Yes, students will be encouraged, and guided in their dual enrollment choices.

Can students apply after the school year begins?

No.  Applications must be completed and submitted before 5:00 p.m. on February 16, 2024..

Are the full range of core courses that are required for graduation offered at LVA?

Yes, we provide the full gamut of courses required for graduation.

Are the courses NCAA approved in regard to athletic scholarships?

Yes.

What learning management system will be used for the courses?

Teachers will be working with students using Canvas and Zoom. Other software will be used based on the needs of the course.

What if my child is not successful at Lighthouse Virtual Academy?

Lighthouse Virtual Academy is a program of choice, and it will not be right for all students.  Lighthouse Administrators will be vigilant in reviewing student success indicators.  Students whose grades or other indicators show that they are not successful will be placed on a “Probationary” status, and Lighthouse Administrators will engage in discussion with the student and parent/guardian to create a plan.  Lighthouse Administrators may elect, in their discretion, to remove a student from Lighthouse Virtual Academy at the close of the semester/year.

Will there be a meal plan offered?

At this time meals are only available through the home zoned school. Students may arrange parent- provided transportation to home school to eat breakfast and lunch during the provided breaks.
